Puerto Rico has hundreds of miles of coastline, and almost every stretch of it has a beach someone will swear is the best on the island. After years of showing homes from Dorado to Fajardo, these are the five we send friends and clients to first: the ones worth the drive, the ferry or the early alarm.
1. Flamenco Beach, Culebra
Flamenco regularly shows up on “best beaches in the world” lists, and it earns it. It’s a horseshoe of powdery white sand and calm, clear turquoise water on the small island of Culebra, off Puerto Rico’s east coast. At the western end you’ll find the painted, rusting military tanks left over from the U.S. Navy years, now one of the most photographed spots in the Caribbean.
Getting there: take the ferry from Ceiba or a short flight, then a quick taxi or público to the beach. Go on a weekday if you can, and bring cash for the kiosks.
2. Luquillo Beach (Balneario La Monserrate)
About 45 minutes east of San Juan, Luquillo is the classic family beach: a long, palm-lined crescent with gentle water protected by an offshore reef, lifeguards, and facilities. Across the road, the famous Luquillo kiosks serve everything from alcapurrias to fresh fish. Combine it with a morning hike in El Yunque National Forest, just up the road.
3. Playa Sucia (La Playuela), Cabo Rojo
Despite the name (“dirty beach,” a nod to the seaweed that sometimes washes in), this is one of the most dramatic beaches in Puerto Rico. It sits near the Cabo Rojo salt flats at the island’s southwestern tip, framed by limestone cliffs and the historic Los Morrillos Lighthouse. There are no vendors here, so pack water, shade and snacks, and stay for the sunset.
4. Crash Boat Beach, Aguadilla
On the northwest coast, Crash Boat is known for some of the clearest water on the main island. It’s a favorite for snorkeling, and locals jump off the old pier into the deep blue water below. In winter, the northwest coast also draws surfers from around the world, so the whole area has a laid-back surf-town feel.
5. El Escambrón, San Juan
You don’t have to leave the city for a great beach. Balneario El Escambrón, in Puerta de Tierra between Old San Juan and Condado, has calm water sheltered by a natural reef, good snorkeling close to shore, and restaurants steps from the sand. It’s the easiest “beach after work” in the metro area, and a big reason people love living in San Juan.
